It is the world’s first high-pressure hydrogen storage torch, achieving zero carbon emission of the torch in the history of the Winter Olympic Games.All of its internal combustion devices were jointly designed and manufactured by the No.11 and no.101 Institute of aerospace Research in Fengtai District.Its successful development is the perfect application of rocket engine technology of the Sixth Academy of Aerospace Engineering in the Olympic arena, and helps the Beijing Winter Olympics to realize the beautiful dream of “green environmental protection and technological innovation” adhering to the concept of “green, sharing, open and clean”.Hydrogen, as the cleanest fuel, produces no carbon emissions other than water and no pollutants harmful to the environment when burned.In recent years, hydrogen energy field has shown a rapid development trend, and many countries regard hydrogen energy development as one of the important ways of future energy development.As the leading unit for the development of the key technology system for the torch combustion of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the No.11 Institute of the Sixth Aerospace Research Institute is the birthplace of China’s aerospace liquid power industry. The leaders of the academy went to the project site many times to investigate the progress of the project and visit the project team.Under the joint efforts of Beijing 11 and 101 institutes affiliated to the Sixth Academy, the green hydrogen power of the sixth Academy, which escorts the “big rocket”, has been successfully transformed into an energy source to ignite the “small torch”.At the end of February 2020, a number of elite members of THE SIXTH Academy of Aerospace Engineering were selected to form the torch holding project team, which started interdisciplinary and multi-field scientific research and technological breakthroughs, and started the arduous process of transforming the torch artistic creativity from scratch into physical products.On July 9, 2020, the torch principle prototype was integrated for the first time, and the successful fire test marked the official start of the engineering development of hydrogen fuel torch.In the process of development, the difficulties are frequent.Adjust the flame color, control the flame shape, etc., are the problems to be overcome one by one.The torch is designed to withstand 42 megapascals of pressure in its internal components, more than 50 times the pressure of a traditional torch, which can be imagined at a depth of 4,200 meters under the sea.The flame produced by the Olympic torch needs to have a specific height and shape to ensure a flowing beauty.The key to the beautiful shape of the flame is a part called a pressure relief valve in the combination valve, the hydrogen control valve, which is installed at the mouth of the cylinder.If the hydrogen pressure through the pressure reducing valve is too large, the flame will be similar to the tail flame ejection from the rocket engine, not only unsafe, uncontrollable, but also lack of aesthetic feeling, so the pressure must be controlled at the same level as atmospheric pressure, need to reduce the pressure through the pressure reducing valve about 420 times.And to complete the decompression task successfully at the same time, ensure light weight, small size, in the extremely limited space to seek solutions.To realize the combustion system technology with the torch, the torch team took out a major national aerospace engineering task, to ensure that the momentum and space without any hidden heaven YanShen fine solid work style, in more than two years completed all the technical implementation of artistic originality, use technical strength boost the spread of the concept of green Olympics, hi-tech Olympics,To show the scientific and technological strength of China’s space industry in front of the world.With the final design of the hand-held torch for the Winter Olympic Games, the “flying” torch, which embodies the heritage and development of Beijing as a “double Olympic City”, has entered the public view. The torch dances like a ribbon, spins and rises, and finally appears as a flying flame, full of good meaning.However, due to the graceful and elegant shape of the internal and external ribbons, the available space inside the torch is very limited.It brings a series of challenges to the development of combustion devices and other systems.Compared with traditional torches fueled by propane and butane, the “Flying” torch uses hydrogen as fuel and takes a completely different technological route.Hydrogen requires twice as much storage space as propane to maintain the same combustion time, so simply reducing the size of the hydrogen storage bottle cannot meet the requirements of hydrogen combustion, which presents an unprecedented challenge for the flare combustion system.After repeated arguments, the torch team of the Six hospitals finally decided to reduce the size of hydrogen storage bottles and improve the design pressure. However, in such a “pull the whole body” development project, any slight change will bring countless unknown and difficulties waiting for the development team to discover and overcome.The space crew braved the difficulties and finally broke through the key technical problem of high pressure hydrogen storage.At the same time, by integrating functional modules and optimizing the layout of internal components, the team also reduced the size of the hydrogen valve from 162 mm to 110 mm while increasing the pressure by 20%, thus securing the most valuable volume for the gas cylinder.In order to ensure the high reliability, safety and stability of hand-held torch, after the preliminary design was completed, the research team of the Sixth Institute carried out comprehensive performance test on hand-held torch.The hand-held torch comprehensive test system was designed and built to simulate wind, rain, snow, low temperature, high altitude, high humidity and other climate conditions and motion simulation devices, so as to fully cover the simulation of various extreme motion states in the torch relay process.In the end, the team carried out more than 300 reliability tests on the entire combustion system, which enabled the torch to pass the test in extreme cold, high winds, harsh rain and snow.After much training, “Feiyang” in 10 strong wind, minus 40℃ low temperature, heavy rain, as well as 5000 meters high altitude and other environments are very stable combustion state, can be said to have steel and iron bones, not afraid of any environment.Source: District Science and Information Bureau editor: Li Na Liu Yangyi
